Meaning Behind GTI

The exact verbiage behind "GTI" isn't 100% solidified. There's debate as to whether it stands for Grand Touring Injection, Gran Turismo Iniezione, or another similar phrase. The meaning behind GTI, however, is the fuel injection system. Essentially, GTI refers to a grand tourer or Gran Turismo with fuel injection. Nowadays, fuel injection is standard, but when the Golf GTI was first introduced in 1976, fuel injection was big news. The name stuck through the years — and the Golf GTI is still one of the brand's top models today.

Fun fact: In Italian, "Gran Turismo" refers to cars that can travel long distances without sacrificing style of comfort.
