The critics have spoken! MotorWeek has honored the Volkswagen Atlas SUV with the Drivers’ Choice Award for the ‘Best Large Utility Vehicle of 2019,’ marking the second year in a row the Atlas has earned this distinction. Read on to learn what the award means and the fierce competition the Atlas had to overcome to earn it twice.
Driver’s Choice Awards
Each year, the experts at MotorWeek review the latest vehicle models to see which have the greatest appeal to modern consumers. They judge cars, trucks, CUVs, and SUVs based not only on criteria like price, practicality, performance, and fuel economy but style and safety, too.
For 2019, MotorWeek began with more than 150 vehicles, including several large three-row SUVs like the Atlas. Each vehicle is road-tested to evaluate handling in a variety of circumstances and to see how efficient the vehicle is during heavy use, as well as light driving. Vehicles are also inspected, and the interior, exterior materials, and design are evaluated for placement, quality, and ease of use. Examiners also explore the vehicle’s available options, assessing whether the standard and optional systems perform as they should, as well as how intuitive they are to use.
Using these tests, the field is gradually narrowed, until a single, clear winner is left in each category. In spite of heavy competition in this popular class, the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas was chosen as the victor, because, according to the organization, “None offer the total, roomy, easy to drive package for growing families quite like the Atlas.”
