2017 Jetta Driver View

Your vehicle is equipped with a number of Volkswagen warning lights that alert you to issues with your vehicle. One of these lights is the EPC or Electronic Power Control light. If your EPC light is lit, it could mean there's a problem with the Volkswagen vehicle’s throttle system that requires certified service.

What is the Throttle System?

Your Volkswagen vehicle’s throttle system consists of:

  • Throttle Pedal
  • Traction Control
  • Cruise Control
  • Throttle Body

Together, these systems regulate speed and engine power. A problem within the throttle system could prevent you from accelerating, cause the vehicle to behave sluggishly, and even prevent you from driving at all if it’s severe enough. Of course, your EPC light could indicate other issues as well, including problems with:

  • Mass Air Flow Sensor
  • Engine Speed Sensor
  • Brake Light Switch

What to Do if the EPC Light Comes On

If your EPC light comes on, pull over and call for roadside assistance if you can. If you’re close to your local Los Angeles-area Volkswagen service center, it may be safe to drive the vehicle there, but no further. If the issue with your throttle system is serious enough, driving it further than a few miles could cause catastrophic engine failure.

Fixing the EPC Warning Light

Your EPC warning light should be evaluated by a trained technician who has the experience, and equipment needed to diagnose your vehicle’s issue. Not only could an unskilled mechanic damage your vehicle’s delicate system if they don’t know what they’re looking for but hunting through the throttle system without the proper equipment could also add hours — and added costs— to your repair.
