However, many people probably are not aware of the automaker’s extensive charitable endeavors. Recently, Volkswagen announced the sponsorship of the Conservation Fund to expand the Cherokee National Forest, which is a one-hour drive away from the Volkswagen Assembly Plant in Chatanooga, Tennessee. And now, both companies are coming full circle, as Volkswagen built a custom I.D. Civil rights pioneers Esau and Janie B. Jenkins worked tirelessly to improve the lives of African Americans, providing transportation for the community with their 1966 Volkswagen Type 2 Bus (a.k.a. “Jenkins’ Bus), helping to ensure children were educated and adults were employed. They also helped adults learn to read, write, and exercise their civil rights, along with giving their community access to financial services with the opening of a credit union. (more…)

The iconic Volkswagen “Light Bus” rose to fame back in 1969 during the Woodstock music festival at Max Yusgur’s dairy farm in New York State. After all of these years, the Light Bus has come back to life with an exhaustive restoration effort. A documentary, titled “The Woodstock Bus,” was recently released on the CuriosityStream documentary streaming and on-demand service. The Woodstock Bus chronicles the story of unlikely friends and fans working together to find and resurrect the original Light Bus. The release of the documentary coincided with the recent 50th Anniversary of the Woodstock Festival. (more…)

The iconic Volkswagen “Light Bus” rose to fame with its appearance at the 1969 Woodstock Art and Music Fair. The “Light Bus,” which features elaborate paintings and various spiritual messages and symbols — was recently brought back to life with a three-year restorable project with artist Dr. Bob Hieronimus, who painted the original “Light Bus” and Canadian documentarian John Wesley Chisholm, along with help from Volkswagen Group of America.
