Volkswagen started issuing early reports on the 8th-generation Golf model back in late 2018, and right away, reports of a soon-to-be-released Golf model with more than 400 horsepower started to generate tons of buzz. After a brief scare, where it looked as though the model would be scrapped, Volkswagen confirmed some of our wildest hopes in April of 2019. While we still don’t have the final 2020 VW Golf R release date, we now know for certain that a new, more powerful Golf will hit the roads near Santa Monica in 2020.
What Do We Know About the 2020 Volkswagen Golf R?
The current Volkswagen Golf is the “Mk 7,” part of a generation that has run from 2012 to the present. We know that Volkswagen has planned to introduce the Golf Mk 8 (MKVIII) for the new year, and from the start, this means that changes to the new 2020 VW Golf R will be difficult to identify this far in advance. In the 2019 model year, the VW Golf R was offered in a single trim with a 288-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and a 0-60 track time of less than 5 seconds, making it even faster than the well-loved Golf GTI.
The 2020 VW Golf R price is not yet known, but some expect it to cost around $45,000.

With that said, we’re not averse to making some predictions. Recent reports suggest that the 2020 Volkswagen Golf R will be offered in two trim levels, and we expect that at least one will carry a modified version of the current 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. The lower end trim is expected to offer around 300 hp, while the top-level trim is likely to breach 400. We wouldn’t be surprised if it offered a 0-60 track time of less than 4 seconds.
When VW first started floating rumors of a Golf with more than 400 hp, some skeptics responded that such an option borders on the impractical. They pointed out that some comparably-powerful vehicles can be expensive to maintain, but they may not have realized that the 2020 Golf R will start up with a more powerful 48V electric motor. With this extra power under the hood, the new Golf R could reach more than 40 mpg in the right conditions. EPA estimated fuel economy will be announced closer to launch.
How Will the 2020 VW Golf R Look?
The old Golf was known for its subdued looks, which appealed to many drivers but left others searching for a model with a bit more panache. We think the new Golf R will offer the best of both worlds, playing on the self-evident practicality of German engineering while adding more flash for your drives around Beverly Hills and West Hollywood.
The new model will probably feature a slim-line grille, standard LED headlights, a more sharply-defined bumper, and of course, unmistakable R-Line Badging. Wheels will be available in several different sizes, and since a 19-inch option was available in 2019, we expect to see the same in the new year.
In 2019, the Golf R was offered in more than 40 colors. We’re not sure if we’ll see the same range of options this year, but we think you can expect more than a few striking choices.
Unique interior touches and sporty seats will continue to give the Golf R interior a distinctive look. We expect both trims to feature a touchscreen infotainment system and a built-in Navigation system, as well as all of the technology features you’ve come to expect from VW.
