The iconic Volkswagen Golf — which has been in production since 1974 — has long been a top choice for the compact car segment, with its pleasing driving characteristics, hatchback versatility, and high fuel economy. The VW Golf has aged well by continuously evolving and improving with each generation, with it retaining its “cool” factor after all of these years. Driving around Beverly Hills can be a hike (sometimes literally), but when you have VW driver assistance features like the VW Blind Spot monitor, things are a bit easier. Find out how the VW Blind Spot Monitor works, and take a look at the various models offered with this safety feature and the entire VW Driver Assistance Package.
How VW Blind Spot Monitor Works
The “blind spot” is the area behind the driver on the left and right side of the car that prevents one from seeing another vehicle. The VW Blind Spot Monitor is a special driver assistance safety feature that’s offered on new VW vehicles, which allows drivers to be aware of vehicles in their blind spot.
The Blind Spot Monitor uses two radar sensors, located on the left and right back bumpers of the vehicle. When these sensors detect that an object is located within the range of the driver’s blind spot, it alerts the driver by flashing a “blind spot” LED light warning signal on the left and right side view mirrors. It works alongside Rear Traffic Alert, which can detect oncoming traffic before it enters the range of your blind spot.
VW Driver Assistance Package
In addition to the Blind Spot Monitor, Volkswagen offers a variety of other sonar- and sensor-based safety technologies via the VW Driver Assistance Package, which includes:
- Front Assist
- Blind Spot Monitor
- Rear Traffic Alert
- Lane Assist
- Park Assist
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Park Pilot

There’s a lot of excitement around the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta this year, and that’s because this popular VW sedan has been fully redesigned this year. The 2019 Jetta release date was a big event for the team at Volkswagen Santa Monica, where people came from Culver City and the surrounding areas for the VW Jetta launch party. See what auto publications are saying in early 2019 VW Jetta first drive reviews, and then make your way into our dealership to see it for yourself!
Car and Driver 2019 Jetta Review
“All the pleasure from rowing your own gears is present and accounted for, with progressive clutch takeup and a nicely weighted shifter. The automatic has also been upgraded from six speeds to eight, helping the 2019 Jetta to now earn the same EPA fuel-economy estimates regardless of transmission choice: 30 mpg city**, 40 [mpg] highway**, and 34 [mpg] combined**. While the automatic car is inherently less fun to drive, this new transmission shifts quickly and smartly, plus it offers manual control as in other Volkswagen [models], by sliding the gear lever to the side and pushing fore and aft.”
Motor Trend 2019 Jetta Review
“Driven with just two adults onboard, passing performance feels acceptable and the acceleration rate at medium and wide throttle openings seemed more linear than we’ve experienced with other engines with tiny turbos. […] The new transmission reacts swiftly to throttle inputs, especially in its S mode.
Edmunds 2019 Jetta Review
“As we mentioned in our First Look, the 2019 Jetta has grown in every dimension. The wheelbase is longer, and the car is also taller, longer and wider overall. These increases generally translate into more interior room, bringing the Jetta’s cabin in line with today’s much less economy-size compact cars.”
